Historically, night vision devices have primarily used green phosphor displays. Because the human eye can distinguish many shades of green and subtle brightness differences within the green image, green phosphor became the traditional display color for night vision systems. In contrast, white phosphor is a newer display option that has gained significant popularity over the past decade. Some users report that white phosphor provides improved perceived contrast, especially in darker environments where the image appears closer to a neutral black-and-white presentation. But others find that white phosphor causes less eye fatigue during extended use.

The green phosphor and white phosphor are not simply a matter of one being universally better than the other. Many studies indicate that the raw performance difference between green and white phosphor is relatively small, with user preference often playing the largest role in perceived performance.
