Autogated vs Non-Autogated Night Vision: What’s the Difference?

Before comparing autogated and non-autogated night vision systems, it is important to first understand what “autogating” actually does inside an image intensifier tube.

Autogating is an electronic control technology to regulate the amount of light reaching the image intensifier tube. It works by flipping the power supply on and off at extremely high frequencies, allowing the system to dynamically manage electron flow under changing lighting conditions. Its primary function is to keep the image intensifier tube operating within an optimal voltage range, allowing the system to maintain usable brightness, stable contrast, and improved situational awareness.

In practical use, autogating provides two major advantages. First, it prevents damage to the image intensifier tube from high-intensity light such as vehicle headlights, weapon lights, street lamps, or sudden illumination changes, extending the lifespan of the tube. Second, it maintains image quality even under strong light, ensuring that night vision devices don't "blind" due to sudden changes in light conditions, allowing users to maintain situational awareness. For users operating in urban terrain, inside structures, around vehicles, or in environments with constantly changing ambient light, autogating dramatically improves overall usability. Instead of the image washing out or becoming excessively bright when exposed to strong light sources, the system remains more controlled and visually stable.

In contrast, image intensifier tubes with non-automatic gating are equipped with Bright Spot Protection (BSP), which differs from automatic gating. When a non-automatic gating device encounters strong light, it reduces the photocathode voltage to protect the image intensifier tube, but this results in a decrease in image clarity.

In real-world use, non-autogated systems generally perform adequately in consistently dark rural environments where lighting conditions remain stable. However, when operating around artificial light sources or rapidly changing illumination, users may experience increased blooming, reduced contrast, and temporary loss of image detail compared to autogated systems.

Which One Should You Choose?

The answer largely depends on your intended use environment and budget.

If your night vision device will primarily be used in rural, low-light environments with minimal artificial lighting, the practical performance gap between auto-gated and non-autogated systems may be relatively small. For hunting, static observation, or occasional recreational use under stable lighting conditions, a quality non-auto-gated tube can still provide excellent performance. However, for professional users, tactical applications, vehicle operations, force-on-force training, or urban environments with highly dynamic lighting conditions, autogating is generally considered the superior option. For many experienced users, autogating is less about achieving a brighter image and more about maintaining image control when conditions become unpredictable.

Cost is also an important consideration. At the same performance grade, autogated image intensifier tubes typically cost several hundred dollars more than comparable non-autogated models due to the added complexity of the power supply and control electronics.
